Uploading Images and Videos

BoxCast allows you to upload images and videos as part of your streaming channel. These can be used for custom preview images, as pre-recorded or post-produced events, and more.

Uploading Preview Images

The Preview image is used as the video thumbnail in the playlist and is also shown as the player background before the event starts.  To add a custom one, select your already-scheduled event and choose Edit. Drag and drop a JPG or PNG image onto the designated area and click Save.  You can also browse to find your recent preview image uploads (if you'd like to re-use the same one), locate it on your computer with the file dialog, or even search Unsplash for free stock images.

Image File Format Tips: The image you upload should be 16:9 aspect ratio. We recommend 1280x720 to ensure viewers have the best experience, balancing file size with image quality.

Uploading Account Poster Image

The Account Poster Image is displayed on the embedded widget before an event begins and behind the play button for an on-demand video before it starts.  To add a custom one, select the Settings tab, then select Player Defaults and click the edit button. Choose the Custom Poster Image checkbox.

Uploading Pre-Event Video

A Pre-Event Video is played in a loop as part of the embed widget prior to the event starting. It can be used as a teaser or promotional material.  To add a custom one, select the Settings tab, then select Player Defaults and click the edit button. Choose the Custom Pre-Event Video checkbox. Drag and drop your MP4 file into the designated area and click Save.

Image File Format Tips: These videos are not transcoded by our server, so you need to ensure the video is watchable by your viewers.  Some good rules of thumb are:

  • Your video should be exported as an MP4.
  • Recommend 720p resolution, with variable bitrate (target between 1Mbps and 5Mbps).
  • FastStart should be enabled (moov atom at the front of the file).
  • Video codec: H.264, High Profile, Progressive scan (no interlacing).
  • Audio codec: AAC, 44.1khz or 48khz.

Uploading Event Videos (beta)

The ability to upload entire events is a feature still in beta and only available for select customers.
